Negroni, pronounced Nee-groan-nii is probably one of the must-have easy cocktails during this quarantine. Straight to the point in three part mixes, this is definitely something to try. 

It’s a popular Italian cocktail named after an Italian Count who demanded the bartender replace the club soda in his Americano drink with gin. Definitely sounds like what modern day Nigerian men will do. 

Considered an apértif which is an alcoholic drink taken before a meal to stimulate the appetite. It is made of one part gin, one part Campari and one part sweet vermouth and garnished with an orange peel. Campari is a love hate thing. It can be an acquired taste that some people will love while others will not. In this cocktail, the sweet vermouth and herbal gin offset some of the Italian spirit’s bitterness so it’s more palatable. A Negroni is typically stirred not shaken. 

Here’s how to have a taste of Italy at home:

Ingredients 

30ml Gin

30ml Campari

30ml sweet Vermouth 

1 Orange a slice of orange or orange peel

Step one

Pour all ingredients into a tall glass filled with ice. 

 

Step two

Stir for about 3 minutes until well chilled. This will let all the ingredients blend well together. 

 

Step three

Strain into a short glass with ice 

 

Step four 

Garnish with a slice of orange or orange peel

It’s said the best drink ware for this cocktail is an old fashioned glass but any glass will do. For best results, you’ll be better off using an imported orange. This is easily available at Spar, Shoprite or your local Fruits store.
