The idea of tasting something better than ice cream; gelato, made Hans and René the number one place on my list to visit. I had seen their pictures on Instagram and had to know what all the hype was about. 

When I walked into the store at Raddsion Blu, I was met by a friendly Caucasian Chef with brown hair in a sleek ponytail. I couldn’t really tell if he was French or Italian but his greeting made me feel warm and welcome. That was short lived though, as the pricing made me walkout in a minute. I couldn’t for the life of me understand why everything was so pricey. A scoop of gelato was N650/700 depending on what you were getting and their brownies were N800. No thanks. This was back when Ice cream factory scoops were going for N300/400. The price tag was hard to swallow; I left. 

Fast forward to a few weeks later, my brother kept on going on and on about how it has the best ice cream in Lagos and is worth every penny. Everyone went on about the place, so I decid    ed to give it a second chance. 

Thankfully I wasn’t disappointed. 

There were so many options to choose from. I tasted quite a few and settled on two scoops; frozen forest fruit sorbet and vanilla gelato on a red velvet cone. Total cost N1550.

The sorbet was heavenly. Rich, tasted like real fruit and absolutely perfect, not watery like some sorbets I had tried in the past. The vanilla gelato was top of the charts. Flavourful, smooth and a lot more creamier than any ice cream I had ever had and the cone was just perfect. Italians call their version of ice cream “Gelato”. It is much healthier than ice cream with 4-9% of fat. Ice cream on the other hand has 25% fat. Gelato also packs more flavour. Trust the Italians to do dessert better than anyone else.

Settled and enjoying my treat, it dawned on me how great the ambience was. The all white with hints of grey theme indoors was complemented with the blue sky painted on the ceiling and great lighting. There is an outdoor seating area as well. The sweets corner reminded me of the random vending machines at theme parks from my childhood. The toilet was not left out, it has an Alice in wonderland 3D wall paper that suddenly became the “it” place to take a picture when you visited. Never really been my thing. 

I fell in love with Hans and Rene and it has been my go to happy place. Most especially thankful they decided to open a store closer to my end at Lennox Mall Lekki. I advise you taste whatever you might be considering; zobo and agbalumo sorbet wasn’t doing it for me. Their cupcakes, pastries and cakes are absolutely divine. Definitely something you should try.
